The Holy Cross baseball team earned a 12-9 win against Harvard on April 28 at the Ballpark at Fitton Field.
This victory marks the third win in four games for Holy Cross, bringing their record to 19-25. Harvard’s overall record moves to 8-26. The result is significant as it demonstrates Holy Cross’s recent improvement and ability to secure wins late in the season.
Junior John LaFleur and sophomore Nick Spaner led the Crusaders offensively, each recording three hits. LaFleur went 3-for-4 with three doubles, three runs batted in (RBI), and a run scored, while Spaner was perfect at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance, two RBI, three runs scored, and a walk. Junior Ryan Grundy contributed his fourth home run of the season and senior CJ Egrie added two RBI.
Sophomore pitcher Marco Citro earned his first win of the year by throwing three scoreless innings in relief. Junior Cole Mascott secured his first collegiate save after pitching one-third of an inning. Starting pitcher Aidan Gilbert threw three innings for Holy Cross, allowing five hits and two runs—one earned—while striking out three batters.
The game saw Harvard take an early lead with two runs in the third inning before Holy Cross responded with six runs during their half of the third inning. The Crusaders extended their lead to 10-2 by scoring four more times in the fifth inning. Although Harvard narrowed the gap by scoring four runs in the seventh and another three in the ninth, Mascott closed out the game for Holy Cross.
Afterward, head coach Ed Kahovec shared postgame thoughts on social media: “Postgame with head coach @EdKahovec ???#GoCrossGopic.twitter.com/tMQD93bUmq”.
