The Holy Cross baseball team split a doubleheader against Bucknell on April 11, dropping the first game 5-4 in seven innings before winning the second game 7-5 at Depew Field.
This result puts Holy Cross at a record of 16-17 overall and 10-5 in Patriot League play, while Bucknell stands at 19-14 overall and leads the league with a 12-3 mark. The Crusaders have now won ten of their last fourteen games.
In the second game, sophomore pitcher Brett Mulligan delivered his best collegiate performance by allowing only one hit and one walk over five shutout innings, striking out three batters and throwing a career-high 61 pitches. Mulligan combined with senior Jaden Wywoda to retire fifteen consecutive Bucknell hitters across both games. Junior John LaFleur contributed offensively in game two with two hits, three runs batted in, a run scored, and a walk. He drove in two key insurance runs with a single in the seventh inning.
Senior CJ Egrie recorded his thirty-fourth stolen base of the season during game two, bringing his career total to eighty-six steals—fourth all-time in Patriot League history. He needs six more steals to move into third place all-time.
Game one saw Bucknell take an early lead by scoring four runs in the first inning and adding another run in the second for a five-run advantage. Holy Cross responded with four runs during the fifth inning but could not tie the score despite loading the bases late. In game two, Holy Cross built up a seven-run lead before holding off Bucknell’s late rally; sophomore Marco Citro earned his first save by recording the final five outs.
Holy Cross will aim to win its weekend series when it faces Bucknell again on Sunday, April 12 at Depew Field.
