The Holy Cross men’s tennis team lost to Lafayette College 4-3 in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament Championship on April 23 at the Ulrich Varsity Tennis Courts in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
This defeat ends the Crusaders’ season with an overall record of 8-13. Lafayette, now holding a record of 5-10, will move on to play top-seeded Lehigh in the quarterfinals scheduled for Friday, April 24.
During doubles play, Holy Cross secured the opening point by winning at both No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Senior Patrick Ling and freshman Luke Prokopis won their match against Ricky Espaillat and Nick McKenzie with a score of 6-4. The outcome of the doubles segment came down to No. 2 doubles after Lafayette claimed victory at No. 3; juniors Teddy Callery and Matt Carlson ultimately clinched their match for Holy Cross after recovering from a deficit against Jake Magnusson and Sam Gelber.
In singles competition, Lafayette quickly tied the match by taking No. 6 singles before earning wins at both No. 2 and No. 3 positions to lead Holy Cross by two points. Freshman Aayush Jhaveri narrowed the gap for Holy Cross with a straight-set win over John Dickens at No. 4 singles (7-5, 6-3). Ling then leveled the contest by defeating Nikolas Martirossian at No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-3). However, Lafayette clinched its place in the quarterfinals with a win at No.1 singles.
