The Holy Cross softball team lost to Boston University by a score of 23-8 in five innings on Sunday, Apr. 26, in the final game of their weekend series.
The result marks a decisive win for Boston University and closes out the three-game set between the two teams. The game was shortened to five innings due to the run rule.
Holy Cross started strong, taking an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. However, Boston University answered with four runs in their half of the inning and continued to add runs throughout the contest. Freshman Bella Nugent and junior Ava Gambichler each recorded RBI hits during a five-run second inning that briefly put Holy Cross ahead 8-4. BU’s Kylie Doherty responded with a three-run home run as part of a rally that saw Boston University take back control of the game.
On the mound for Holy Cross, Bridget Mulkeen pitched one inning and allowed nine runs (two earned) on two hits while striking out two batters. She was followed by Sophia Roncone, Avery Toddings, and Bulla Nugent in relief roles. For Boston University, Danika Nell earned her fourth win of the season after pitching over three innings without allowing any hits or runs.
At the plate for Holy Cross, Silje Emery went two-for-three with a triple and scored twice; Bella Nugent reached base twice and drove in one run; Anna Brait added two RBIs; Ava Gambichler contributed an RBI double; Kendall Grady scored once; while BU’s Kylie Doherty led all hitters with three hits—including two home runs—and six RBIs.
Looking ahead, Holy Cross will travel to play its final non-conference games of the regular season at the University of New Haven on Tuesday, Apr. 29. The doubleheader is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
