The Holy Cross softball team split its doubleheader against Lafayette on Apr. 18 at Freshman Field, dropping the first game 5-3 before coming back to win the second game 4-2.
This result keeps Holy Cross in contention for a spot in the Patriot League Tournament, as they are now tied with Lafayette and Bucknell for the final tournament position. The outcome of this series could determine which team advances, with a deciding game scheduled for Sunday, Apr. 19 at 10:30 a.m.
In the first game, freshman Bella Nugent gave Holy Cross an early lead with a two-run home run and later drove in another run on a sacrifice fly. However, Lafayette rallied late behind home runs from Caroline Hall and Regan Dillon to secure their victory.
The second game saw Holy Cross trailing until the bottom of the sixth inning when they scored four runs to take control. Sophomore Kate Trudgen delivered a go-ahead two-run single after Silje Emery tied the score. Freshman pitcher Bridget Mulkeen pitched her first career complete game, allowing only two runs over seven innings and stranding six baserunners.
Before play began, Holy Cross honored Genoa Grosch Dickson ’99 by retiring her No. 11 jersey—the first such honor in program history—and recognizing her numerous records for pitching achievements during her collegiate career.
The weekend series will conclude Sunday morning as teams compete for playoff positioning.
