The Holy Cross women’s track and field team competed at three different meets over the weekend of April 10 and 11. The Crusaders participated in the Friar Invitational at Providence College, the Tufts Spring Invitational, and the UMass Commonwealth Invitational.
These events allowed athletes to showcase their skills across a range of disciplines. Senior Celia Kulis set a new school record in the heptathlon at Tufts, scoring 5,024 points. Her performance included running the 100 hurdles in 13.92 seconds, clearing 1.58 meters in high jump, throwing 11.71 meters in shot put, running the 200 meters in 25.40 seconds, jumping 5.42 meters in long jump, throwing javelin for a distance of 32.27 meters, and finishing with an 800-meter run time of 2:34.85. Kulis had previously set her own record during last year’s Patriot League Outdoor Championships.
At the Friar Invitational, junior Lindsay Gill and freshman Macie Salado placed third and fifth respectively in the women’s 400-meter hurdles with times just over one minute each. Other notable finishes included sophomore Danielle DiEsso placing ninth in the women’s 400-meter dash with a time under one minute; junior Annabel Murray also finished ninth in the women’s 800-meter run; while sophomore Abby Desmarais and senior Giavanna Ciaravino took third and fourth place respectively in the women’s 200-meter dash.
The UMass Commonwealth Invitational saw more strong performances from Holy Cross athletes: junior Bridget Sachs cleared a height of nearly four meters to take third place in pole vault; freshman Frankie Spagna and sophomore Victoria McGowan finished sixth and seventh respectively among triple jumpers; juniors Gabby Paolella and Maddie Goncalves were top finishers among shot putters; sophomore Lily Deforge secured second place overall with her discus throw; junior Grace Ryan won first place for javelin throw while Sienna Horn placed fourth.
Relay teams also found success as Holy Cross won first place honors for their effort on Saturday’s four-by-100 meter relay event with a finishing time under forty-eight seconds.
Looking ahead, Holy Cross will host its second annual Jim Kavanagh Legacy Invitational on April 18 at Hart Track.
