Bear Mountain at Worcester ranked second in capacity within the county, operating 173 beds, while St. Mary Health Care Center followed with 172 beds.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the nation’s population of older adults is on the rise, while younger demographic groups shrink. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans age 65 and over grew by 13%, compared to a 1.7% decline among those under 18. The older adult population has surged over the last 100 years, climbing from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million in 2024.
A 2021 analysis predicts nearly half of Americans in this age group, or about 28 million, are expected to need some form of long-term care or support. The study finds that more than a third could require a nursing home at some point.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an advocacy and educational organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
