Mogel tabbed to lead women's soccer program

Nichols College Vice President and Director of Athletics Jack Hayes has announced the hiring of Angel Mogel as the 15th women's soccer coach in program history.

Mogel – who spent 18 years at fellow Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) member Wentworth Institute of Technology, including 15 as the head coach of the women's soccer program – most recently served as the girls varsity head coach at West Boylston Middle High School (2016-20) and Wachusett Regional High School (2021).

"I am beyond excited to become the next women's soccer coach at Nichols College," said Mogel, who was named CCC Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2001. "I would like to thank the search committee – including President Glenn Sulmasy, Vice President Jack Hayes, and Associate Director of Athletics Kristan Mallet – for this opportunity. I felt at home the second I stepped on campus and the highlight on my visit was meeting all of the student-athletes on the team. I am looking forward to building upon Coach Pickul's success and it's going to be an absolute pleasure to help build this program into an annual contender in the CCC. I can't wait to get started."

The founder of Wentworth's women's soccer program, Mogel organized a club women's soccer team that competed in the fall of 1997. The Leopards made their varsity debut the following season with wins in each of their first three matches en route to qualifying for the CCC Tournament – the first of 11 conference tournament appearances in her 15 seasons at the helm.

From 2001-2005, Wentworth had a very successful five-year stretch, posting a 63-33-2 (.653) record during this span and qualifying for the CCC Tournament in each of those seasons, finishing no lower than fourth. The 2002 campaign saw the Leopards establish a program-record for wins a season (15), and in 2003, the program advanced to the CCC Championship match for the first time in school history. Wentworth made four consecutive trips to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Tournament, including in 2005 when the Leopards earned their highest seed (sixth).

In her 15 seasons in Boston, Mogel posted a record of 133-136-10 (.495) and earned both her and the program's 100th win in a 3-1 triumph over Anna Maria on October 17, 2007. She coached five student-athletes who earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-New England honors, a CCC Rookie of the Year, three CCC Senior Scholar-Athletes of the Year, and a two-time Academic All-America. Additionally, seven of her former student-athletes have been inducted in Wentworth's Athletic Hall of Fame. Mogel has served on both the NSCAA England Regional Rankings Committee and the NCAA New England Regional Advisory Committee, and was an evaluator for the Olympic Development Program.

"The hiring of Angel Mogel as our women's soccer coach is a tremendous step towards building a team that can contend for a conference championship year-in and year-out," said Hayes. "Her passion for coaching was evident from our first conversation and her track record of success established her as the ideal candidate to lead our young program."

Mogel – who also served as the Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator at WIT from 1998-2011 – stepped down as head coach following the 2011 campaign and embarked on a five-year run as the Director of Athletics at Wentworth. During that time, she added three varsity sports (women's lacrosse, men's rowing, and men's cross country) which increased student-athlete participation to nearly 320 student-athletes. Mogel also oversaw the re-surfacing of Sweeney Field during the spring of 2012, increased budgets and staffing levels, created numerous new departmental initiatives, and streamlined departmental operations.

As a collegiate student-athlete, Mogel was a four-year member of the women's soccer program at Springfield College, where she was a three-time National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) All-American selection (1990-92). She graduated as the school's leading scorer, compiling 127 points on 51 goals and 25 assists, was a Northeast-10 Conference First Team All-Star three times (1990-92) and two-time NE-10 Player of the Year (1991-92).

Mogel earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Rehabilitation from Springfield in 1993 and earned her Master's degree in Recreational Therapy from Springfield four years later. She is a member of both the Springfield College and Northeast-10 Conference Hall of Fame.
