Assumption University men's lacrosse junior midfielder Jack Galvin (Yarmouthport, Mass.) has been selected to Team Ireland to compete in the 2022 World Lacrosse Men's Under-21 (U-21) World Championships in Limerick, Ireland.
The 2022 World Lacrosse Men's U21 World Championship is taking place at the University of Limerick in Limerick, Ireland, from August 10-20.
"It's a really cool experience playing in the World Championships," exclaimed Galvin. "Meeting people from around the world has been amazing, and seeing the game's overall growth has been eye-opening. Representing Ireland and my family's heritage is the honor of a lifetime, and I'm enjoying every second of this trip."
This is the second time Galvin has been selected to represent Ireland. He was previously selected to participate in the U-20 World Championships, which was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In two years at Assumption on the Men's Lacrosse team, Galvin has been a starter for every game he has appeared in. In 22 games, the junior has tallied 37 ground balls and forced 14 turnovers.
"I'm absolutely overjoyed to see Jack get this opportunity to play on the world stage," said Head Coach Guy Bourdon of Assumption University Men's Lacrosse team. "He's done a phenomenal job representing his family, Ireland, and Assumption University during the games. Based on how well he performed in his first game, I expect Jack will continue to play at a very high level for the remainder of the tournament."
Galvin recorded one assist in the opening game against Germany while scooping up five ground balls.
Ireland next takes on Jamaica (Aug. 13) before wrapping up pool play against Latvia (Aug. 14). The double-elimination tournament will run from August 16-20.
About the Lacrosse World Championships
A record 23 teams will compete in the Championship, the largest ever age group World Championship staged by World Lacrosse.
Originally an Under-19 World Championship, the World Lacrosse membership in 2020 approved a change in the upper age of eligibility, raising the event to Under-20. Due to postponement brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the upper age of eligibility for the men's age group World Championship is being raised on a one-time basis to Under-21 for the 2022 year.
The Men's Under-19 World Championships commenced in 1988, with Australia, the USA, Japan, and Canada hosting. The championship tournament runs every four years. The USA has won all seven previous championships, but with two losses in the game in 2012 held in Turku, Finland, during the round-robin stage, signs of increased parity were showing. ?
Twelve teams attended the 2008 and 2012 U-19 championships, with Australia, Bermuda, Canada, England, Finland, Germany, Iroquois Nationals, Japan, Korea, Scotland, USA, and Wales in 2008, and the Czech Republic and the Netherlands replaced Bermuda and Japan in the 2012 event in Turku, Finland.
The 2016 tournament was once again hosted by Canada, with an expanded field of fourteen teams which included previous participants Canada, USA, Iroquois Nationals, Australia, England, Germany, Korea, and Scotland, as well as newcomers Israel, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mexico, China and of course Ireland. In a close final, the USA returned from an 8-2 deficit to Canada at halftime to win 13-12, scoring the winning goal with 8 seconds remaining in the game to retain the gold.
