Gordon Outlasts Women’s Basketball, 87-81
The Nichols women's basketball team battled hard in an 87-81 loss to Gordon on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Bennett Center. With the loss, the Bison drop to 1-5 overall and still seek their first CCC victory of the campaign.
Abrianna Vazquez got off to a hot start, going a perfect three-of-three from three-point range, scoring 13 points in the opening quarter as the Bison led 26-16 over the hosts.
The Fighting Scots outscored their visitors by seven in the second quarter to trail by just three at the halftime break, 44-41. Madison Wynbeek scored 10 points in the first half for Gordon.
Gordon took a one-point lead into the fourth quarter before pulling away in the closing minutes. Hannah Lomonaco converted on a layup attempt in the paint to take an 83-81 lead over the Bison, and four additional free throws gave the Fighting Scots all they needed for their first CCC win of the season.
Vazquez led the Bison with 30 points shooting over 47% from the field. The senior also tacked on seven assists, two rebounds, and two steals in the setback. Both Leandra Ortiz and Adriana Romano recorded three steals of the 12 Nichols steals.
The Bison will continue its CCC slate on Tuesday, December 6 in a road matchup with Curry at the Student Center Gymnasium with tip-off set for 5 p.m.
