Njavan Stewart pours in a career-high 28 points while Isiah Gaiter registers a double-double as the Assumption University men's basketball team defeats Post University 83-77 Thursday evening in non-conference action.
THE BASICS
Score: Assumption University 83, Post University 77
Records: Greyhounds (5-6, 1-4 NE10), Eagles (6-6, 1-2 CACC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first four minutes of the contest were close, as the two teams traded baskets. It wasn't until the 15:53 marker that Njavan Stewart drained a shot from long range. Seconds later, Cooper Creek hit back-to-back three-pointers, expanding the Greyhounds' lead to seven points (17-10). Assumption would slowly push their advantage to 16 points following another Stewart three (35-19) just over the halfway mark of the first half. Post would not go quietly, as they chipped away at the deficit and would get within six (46-40) at the intermission.
The Eagles carried the momentum they established late in the first half into the second, as they would eventually tie the game at 53-53 at the 14:59 marker. The hosts would take their first lead since 10-8 (15:55) when Quest Harris hit a jumper at the 13:13 marker (57-55). The two teams jockeyed for the lead over the next few minutes, but when Stewart hit a pair of free throws with 2:30 remaining in regulation, giving Assumption a lead they would not relinquish. The Greyhounds would go 6-for-7 from the charity stripe to snap their three-game losing skid.
