Men’s Basketball Defeats Wentworth on the Road, 87-64

Matthew Alectus erupted for 30 points on 7-of-10 (70%) shooting from behind the arch to lift the Bison over Wentworth in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday afternoon at Tansey Gymnasium. With the victory, the Bison advance to 10-5 (6-2 CCC) while the Leopards fell to 7-7 (3-5 CCC).

The Bison started off hot on a 12-0 run, with Alectus notching eight of those points, but Wentworth would answer to cut the game down to a four-point margin. Leading 22-18 later in the frame, Quincy Ferebee flushed a dunk to help boost the Bison up by six points.

Jack Connell sank a three-pointer for the Leopards to tie the game at 25-25 with 4:45 to play in the half capping off a Wentworth 7-0 run that spanned just 2:20.

The teams would go on to trade baskets until an Alectus three with 1:14 to play sparked a 6-point swing for the Bison who led 38-32 at the halftime break.

Wentworth came out of the locker room looking for their first lead of the game, and found it just over three minutes into the half when Tyler Stewart converted on a three-point play to put the home team in front 43-40.

Just under four minutes later, leading by just two, Jakigh Dottin nailed a three-pointer which helped fuel the Nichols offense as part of a 15-0 run. Ferebee and Ty Rucker combined to score four straight baskets in the paint on the reign of scoring which lasted 3:09 and put the Bison up 64-49 with under 10 minutes to play.

Nichols would add to that 15-point lead en route to a 23-point victory, their sixth in CCC play this season.

Five Bison touched double-digit point totals in the triumph, as Alectus (30), Ferebee (17), Tavon Jones (14), Ty Rucker (13), and Nate Duckworth (10) all scored 10 points or more.

Jones notched a double-double as he tacked on 10 rebounds. Dottin hauled in nine boards, while the duo of Alectus and Ferebee each reeled in six rebounds apiece.

The Bison shot 56.1% from the field, including a 10-21 (47.6%) performance from deep.

Nichols out-rebounded the Leopards 38-36 while stingy defensive play limited Wentworth to a 35.4% shooting performance from the field.

Alectus' seven made three-pointers pushed him into the top 10 of the Nichols men's basketball record books.

Nichols returns to play in a Wednesday night showdown with Salve Regina in a rematch of the 2022 CCC championship game with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. from the Nichols Athletic Center.
