Men’s Basketball Pushes Win Streak to Five with 90-66 Win Over Salve Regina
In a night honoring senior Jakigh Dottin for reaching the 1,000 collegiate point milestone, the Nichols men's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games, securing a commanding 90-66 victory over Salve Regina in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Wednesday night at the Nichols Athletic Center. The Bison advance to 11-5 (7-2 CCC) while the Seahawks drop to 5-11 (3-6).
Salve Regina opened up the game on a 14-2 run over 4:19 with Clay Brochu cashing in on a pair of three-pointers to take an early lead on the road.
Nichols would take its first lead with 7:00 to play in the half as Nate Duckworth sank a three, putting the Bison up 20-19.
Despite a contested battle with both teams trading buckets down the stretch in the first half, Nichols held a 42-40 advantage at the half.
The Bison would go on a 10-0 run to open up the second half, taking a 12-point lead over Salve Regina 5:23 into the final frame.
Leading by just three with 10:42 to go, Matthew Alectus sandwiched two three-pointers around a Tavon Jones layup in the paint to give Nichols an eight-point surge of offense, putting the hosts back up 11.
Nichols kept its foot on the gas as the second half progressed, and Quincy Ferebee soared through the lane and slammed home a dunk, sending the Bison faithful into a frenzy and forcing Salve Regina into a timeout trailing by 16 with 6:07 to play.
Nichols would extend its lead mostly at the free-throw line over the remaining minutes to secure its 24-point victory, the fifth win in a row.
Alectus recorded his tenth double-double of the season with 23 points and 14 rebounds while adding an assist, block, and steal to his stat line. Jones was close behind in both scoring and rebounding, recording 21 points while hauling in 13 boards.
The Bison out-rebounded the Seahawks 54-34 while outscoring the Seahawks in the points off turnovers (26-13), points in the paint (46-30), and fast breaks (33-9).
Nichols will return to CCC action on home court yet again on Saturday, January 21 in a matchup with Gordon set for 3:00 p.m.
