Men's Basketball Holds Off Suffolk, 75-74, for 10th Straight Win

The Nichols men's basketball team was able to withstand a late comeback attempt by Suffolk in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Saturday afternoon to extend their win streak to 10 games. With the victory, the Bison improve to 16-5 (12-2 CCC), while the Rams fall to 13-8 (8-6 CCC). Nichols has now won 10-straight games for the first time since the 2018-19 season, in which the team won its first ten games.

The first half was all Nichols as they came out on fire from deep, nailing seven threes before halftime. Nate Duckworth went 3-3 from behind the arc in the half, while Tavon Jones led the Bison with 12 points to help Nichols to a 45-33 halftime lead.

After a Quincy Ferebee layup to extend the Bison lead to 16 with 10:11 remaining, the Rams would go on a 15-0 run to cut the lead to one with five minutes to play. A Matthew Alectus three was able to temporarily stop the bleeding, but Suffolk refused to go away, cutting the lead to within two multiple times over the course of the next few minutes. With Nichols leading 70-68 with 45 seconds remaining, Ty Rucker was fouled on a three pointer, and he would nail all free throws to extend the Bison lead to five. A corner three by Conor Creane of Suffolk with five seconds left brought the Rams back to within two, but Jakigh Dottin sank both free throws on the other end to all but guarantee a Nichols win. A Suffolk three at the buzzer would be too little too late as the Bison escaped with a 75-74 victory.

Ferebee was the leading scorer for Nichols with 17 points. He also added five steals on the defensive end. Jones chipped in with 15 points of his own, while Dottin added 12, going 6-7 from the foul stripe.

Nichols looks to continue its winning ways on Tuesday, February 7 when they take on Wentworth in CCC action. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. from the Nichols Athletic Center.
