Women's Basketball Comes up Short Against UNE, 94-88
The Nichols women's basketball team lost a hard-fought women's Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup on Saturday afternoon against the University of New England by the score of 94-88. With the loss, the Bison fell to 7-16 (5-11 CCC), while the University of New England jumped to 16-7 (12-4 CCC).
In the first quarter, the visitors outscored Nichols, 17-16, with both teams shooting 6-of-21 (28.57%) from the field.
Nichols took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Nor'easters 32-24 to take a seven-point halftime lead. Abrianna Vazquez led the way for the Bison with 11 points at the break.
UNE came out of the locker room strong, putting up 33 points in the third quarter to retake a two-point lead heading into the final frame. Nichols was able to regain the lead early in the fourth quarter, but UNE went on a 9-2 run to take a 92-85 lead with 36 seconds remaining. The deficit would prove to be too much for the Bison as they lost 94-88.
Vazquez finished with a game-high 31 points. Alyvia Smith chipped in with 15 of her own. The Bison forced 31 turnovers as a team.
Nichols is back in action on Wednesday, February 15 when they travel to Newport, R.I. to take on Salve Regina, with the tip set for 7:30 p.m
