Women’s Basketball Defeats Wentworth, 92-71

The Nichols women's basketball team downed Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent Wentworth on Tuesday night by the score of 92-71. With the win, Nichols improved 7-15 (5-10 CCC), while Wentworth fell to 4-18 (0-15 CCC).

The Bison dominated the first quarter, leading 28-12 heading into the second. Senior Kiera Fernandes had it going early as she led the way with 12 first quarter points on four three-pointers for Nichols. She also added four blocks on the defensive end.

The Leopards had a strong second quarter, holding the Bison to just nine points in the second quarter, to cut their deficit to 13 at the half. Wentworth's Brooke Carlson had eight points to lead all scorers in the frame.

Coming out of the half with a 37-24 lead, Nichols poured on 25 points in the third quarter behind 12 points on 50% shooting from Abrianna Vazquez to pull ahead, 62-42.

The Bison received scoring off the bench in the fourth to cap off the 21-point victory, as both Kayliana Salazar and Azana McClain added five points apiece in the final 10 minutes.

The Leopards turned the ball over 26 times, helping result in 26 points for Nichols. The Bison recorded 31 points on fast-break opportunities, compared to just two for the visitors.

Individually, Fernandes finished with a team-leading 30 points, cashing in on 4-of-9 three-pointers. The Franklin, Mass. native tacked on nine rebounds, five assists, and four blocks in just 21:51.

The Bison return to action in their home finale on Saturday, February 11, as they host the University of New England at 1 p.m. at the Nichols Athletic Center. Prior to tip-off, the program will honor its four members of the class of 2023.
