HOW IT HAPPENED
The game started at a perfect pace for senior Ja'Lyn Armstrong, who contributed eight of the first 11 points on the day for Assumption. The Greyhound defense made it challenging for the Penmen early on, as they went 0-5 on their first five threes. A Jess Knight basket with 11 seconds remaining gave the visitors a one-point lead after the first quarter.
Knight continued to get it going in the second period, as she scored again right out of the break. Marina Callahan restored the lead with back-to-back buckets to get the lead up to two. Others started pitching in, as Amanda Mieczkowski converted in the paint and Armstrong again, who was the first player to reach double figures. The three-ball struggled for the Penmen, as they missed all their first eight attempts. Assumption put out a strong performance in the second half, outscoring the Penmen 15-8 and going into halftime with a 27-21 lead.
Four minutes in, the Greyhounds maintained their lead, with Mieczkowski getting on the scoresheet again and Armstrong crashing hard on the glass to create second opportunities. Armstrong kept it going, as she piled up 18 points and forced a timeout from the Penmen as the lead was its largest on the day at 13. Teagan Curran provided some insurance off the bench, knocking down another three to get the lead to its highest of the day at 16. Using a five-point play, the Penmen got within striking range for the fourth quarter, as they were down 47-38.
Senior Ja'Lyn Armstrong continued her season's best performance, converting a layup out of the gates. Ariana Koivisto tried to keep New Hampshire in it, as her two free throws at 5:39 kept the game in check at eight points. Second-chance opportunities were the key for Assumption, as they had 13 offensive rebounds throughout the game, including one at 3:05 to allow Mieczkowski to knock down a jumper. The Penman continued to miss down the stretch while Meczkowski drilled a three at 2:02, which felt like the dagger. The Greyhounds could dribble the clock out and pick up a massive win on a senior day, 63-41.
