Baseball's bats come alive in 16-5 win against Bentley

Cody Smith goes 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI as the Assumption University baseball team recorded a 16-5 win over Bentley University at Lake Brandley High School Sunday afternoon.

THE BASICS

Score: Assumption University 16, Bentley University 5

Records: Greyhounds (2-5, 0-0 NE10), Falcons (3-1, 0-0 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Bentley was the first team to cross the plate in the bottom of the second, as Jackson Walonis scored on a Kyle Halloran double to center field. Assumption tied the game in the top of the third, as Jake Hamel scampered home on an error by the Falcons' shortstop.

The Greyhounds broke open the game in the top of the fifth, scoring seven runs on three hits. Jared Berardino doubled home a pair of runs before scoring on an Eric Preston single up the middle. Preston crossed the plate on a bases-loaded walk before the bases were cleared on an error by the Bentley right fielder.

After Bentley scored one run in the bottom of the fifth, Assumption plated three runs in the top of the sixth, the tri of runs crossed the plate on a wild pitch, balk, and a sacrifice fly. Jack Barry extended the Greyhounds' lead to 13-2 following a two-run homerun to left field. The Falcons would plate two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Jake Hamel singled home Kevin Cox, and Cody Smith pulled a two-run homerun, making it 16-4. Bentley added one run in the bottom of the ninth, but the Greyhounds' advantage was too great to overcome.
