The Holy Cross softball team fell to Maryland-Eastern Shore, 8-7, in the final contest between these programs Sunday afternoon.


The walk-off loss sends the Crusaders to 5-12 while the Hawks improve to 4-10.

 

STARTING IN THE CIRCLE:

  • Katelyn Smitchko: 3.2 innings pitched, one earned run, one walk, two hits allowed. 
  • Junior Megan Yurchick: 4.0 innings pitched, four earned runs, zero walk, six hits allowed. 
IN RELIEF:

  • Ameenah Ballenger: (W, 2-5) 3.1 innings pitched, one earned run, one walk, three hits allowed.
  • Freshman Sophia Roncone: 2.0 innings pitched, three earned runs, zero walk, two hits allowed.
  • Senior Audrey Gusel: (L, 0-1), one earned run, zero walks, two hits allowed. 
STEPPING TO THE PLATE:

  • Ah-Nayia Oglesby: 2-for-3, run scored, two RBI.
  • Kelsie Ekstrom: 1-for-4, three RBI.
  • Yurchick: 1-for-3, double, two runs scored, one walk, two RBI.
  • Roncone: 0-for-2, two RBI.
  • Senior Bailey Bates: 1-for-3, one RBI, one walk. 
  • Junior Jessica Mott: 1-for-4, double, one RBI, one walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • UMES set a 3-0 early lead following the first inning. 
  • In the third, Yurchick started the scoring for the Crusaders, sending two home on a double. Holy Cross held a 4-3 lead heading into the fifth. 
  • Yurchick and Sniegocki added two runs, following a Hawk error to close out the top half of the seventh. 
  • The Hawks took the win from a three-RBI double from Ekstrom.
