The Assumption University softball team lost a close defensive Game one to the University of New Haven 2-1 and then dropped the second in eight innings at a score of 4-3 on Sunday, March 26th at Marois Field.

THE BASICS

Game One Score: University of New Haven 2, Assumption University 1

Game Two Score: University of New Haven 4, Assumption University 3 - 8 innings

Records: Greyhounds (8-8, 1-3 NE10), New Haven (5-14, 3-1 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME ONE – New Haven 2, Assumption 1

Assumption got on the board first, with a single through the middle by Heather Junjulas scored Lauren Geremia in the bottom of the first inning to give the Greyhounds the early 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, that would be the only run they would score in game one for Assumption as New Haven tightened up its pitching and fielding. Selena Aponte went the full seven innings, only allowing three hits and one run. Assumption started with Kaelin Waldron, who allowed both runs in 4.2 innings pitched while giving up five hits. The Chargers struck in the top of the fourth and fifth with a sac fly and singled up the middle, and those two runs proved to be enough, as they hung on for a 2-1 victory.

GAME TWO - New Haven 4, Assumption 3

Similar to game one, the offense in game two started a bit stagnant. The Greyhounds got runners on third and second with no outs in the bottom of the third, but Mia Iodice got two strikeouts and forced a pop-up to short to get out of the jam. The game was still deadlocked at 0-0 when Aaliyah Amidon caught a ball perfectly and sent it over the left field fence, a two-run shot to put the Chargers up 2-0 in the top of the fifth. The Greyhound defense finally responded with a two-run double by Mackenzie Bruggeman in the bottom of the fifth to tie things up at 2-2.The Chargers immediately threatened again, getting two runners on base with 0 outs, but the Greyhounds got three straight outs on pop-ups and made it out of the inning. Assumption took their first lead on the day in the bottom of the sixth, as Kaitlyn Cahill singled through the infield to score Jaiden Tonucci putting the Greyhounds up 3-2. In the bottom of the seventh, the Chargers crawled back with two outs to tie it up while Lauren Geremia made a great throw to home to get out the potential winning run.In the top of the eighth, New Haven responded again, and Amidon continued her strong day, batting in an RBI following Ashley Veisz's triple. The Greyhounds couldn't muster the comeback in the bottom of the 8th, and New Haven hung on 4-3 to win both games in the doubleheader.
